Knights win big against Fight 62-30 June 16, 2007
The New York Knights recorded their second victory of the season in a tough battle against the courageous Philadelphia Fight. The Fight lived up to their name and fought till the very end even though they had limited replacement options that day.
The Fight gave the Knights an early scare, scoring a try in their first set of six but the Knights came back strong with a series of tries from Joe Hughes, Mike McGeachy, Jason Best and Gareth Baxendale who was a real leader from dummy half for the entire 80 minutes. The Fight came back into the game led by their most dangerous weapon, Tomahawk contender Conway Mackay, setting up two tries and crossing the white once himself. The Fight drew to within 10 points of the Knights with only two minutes left in the first half. A strong run by prop Mike McGeachy and a nice offload to man of the match Jason Best who touched down gave the Knights a bit more breathing room going into the second half.
The second half begun as the first half ended with another try for the Knights. As the game wore on, the mid day sun took its toll on the Fight team and the Knights pulled away with tries from Jason Best, Gareth Baxendale and two for Jeremy "The Jezz" Kosbob, who also showed great support skills.
Mentions must also go out to the veteran players of the New York Knights, Jay Thomas, Bob Balachandran and Glenn Treacher. All three players stepped up to the plate and played with heart and determination to match that of their younger and quicker opponents.
The whole team produced a very good collective performance with solid respect of the game plan and determined individual actions.
"Overall I am very happy about the result of the game" said Knights Head Coach Guillaume Cieutat. "However, the team needs to work on its discipline during the times in a game when things go bad". When asked in particular about the Knights defense Gill felt that there were holes in the defensive line that need to be fixed. "We definitely need to work on our defensive tactics during the game, especially at the end of the half where player's fitness levels drop off." But he also added that it was the best way to prepare next Friday's big clash against 2006 AMNRL Champions Connecticut Wildcats at "The Castle".
