Knights lose to Wildcats in a Thriller 38-30

The Connecticut Wildcats have once again retained the Deserter Cup by downing the New York Knights 38 - 30 at The Castle in New York City this past weekend. The Wildcats survived a late rally by the Knights to clinch victory and retain bragging rights in one of the AMNRL's more intense rivalries.

Battling against a strong head wind, New York got off to a great start with an early try to Shane O'Driscoll after some great lead up work by Adam Nable. As can be expected between these two teams the forward battles where physical as the two heavyweight packs slugged it out to gain ascendancy. The first half saw both teams trading tries early with Tomahawk hooker Gareth Baxendale scoring two in reply to a runaway Danny Bull try to the Cats. However, simple mistakes led to the Wildcats dominating possession for much of the first half. The Connecticut halves and outside backs found plenty of room at The Castle and the scoring reflected that with the Wildcats pulling away to a 16 point lead at halftime.

Running with the wind the Knights came out firing in the second half. Big forwards Mike McGeachy and JC Rocha found plenty of yards up the middle which paved the way for the New York comeback. Two quick tries to Anthony O'Gorman put a scare in Connecticut but once again the Wildcats had an answer with Ben Kelly crossing to keep the cats ahead. Nable once again found the line for the Knights but it was too late and the Wildcats scored a deserved 38 - 30 victory. While no one can fault their dedication or commitment, the Knights inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities cost them the game.

Knights boss Rob Balachandran pondered what might have been if the Knights had been able to play better; ".as usual we were underdogs for the match, but for all our fighting spirit we keep letting ourselves down with simple errors. We need to correct these things over the next few games or face a difficult draw during playoffs!"

The Knights will train this week and be on the road this Saturday against the Raiders.
