June 8, 2009

The New York Knights put together an impressive effort this Saturday night to defeat the DC Slayers 64-8 at home before an excited Knights crowd. Led by efforts of half-back and man of the match Luke Hume, the Knights looked very impressive against the larger Slayers side. Hume, who joined the Knights this year, was quick to show that he will be a force to be reckoned with by scoring 5 trys his first start for the Knights. “I was very comfortable being out there with all the boys. While I know that the season just started and we have a lot of work ahead of us, I am really happy to be here!” Said Hume.

The Knights forward pack was very mobile all game long creating scoring opportunities on offense and delivering crushing tackles on defense. Led by Knights Captain and try scorer Gareth B axendale, the forward pack stopped almost every charge that the Slayers could put throw at them. Veteran prop Andre LaMorgia, lock Kirk Miller and second Row John Keegan all helped to control the middle of the field, giving the Slayers little places to run. Two forwards who also had a big impact were former Bulls prop Ryan Coleman and Tomahawks Prop and Knights former Captain/Coach Matt Astill. Astill wowed the fans with some fancy foot work and his trademark off loads throughout the game!

The Knights backline was equally impressive, shifting the ball around the field and making a few courageous try saving tackles. Winger Dan Mcdermott and Center Tom Scheinzbach were steady all game while Winger Steve Gowa and center John Meoli scored for the Knights in the second half.

The Knights also had some excellent efforts from several newcomers during the game. Stand off Chris Carey, second row Yavier Lozinguez, center Chris Ward, prop Michael Schwalb and second row Calder Orr all turned in impressive performances. Carey, Schwalb and Ward all scored their “Virgin” trys during the game!

“It was a good first game.” Said Knights Coach Guill Cieutat. “We had a lot of new guys and a new system, but they handled the changes well, especially the players who came off the bench!” Knights new Assistant Coach, former Tomahawks and Knights prop Hayden the “TLG” James was also impressed with the efforts. “I thought we would be a little soft in the middle, but once the game started the boys stepped up!”

The Knights will prepare all week for a Friday night showdown against the Aston Bulls. The Bulls who have beaten the Knights the past 2 times they faced each other will come to the Castle this Friday looking to get their first win of the season after their loss to
