Hard-earned victory for Knights over the Boston 13s
A team MVP - Mike Cartwright
B team MVP - Etienne Valette
The New York Knights have started their 2010 campaign with a hard-earned victory over the Boston 13s winning 32-14 at Pier 40 in Manhattan last Saturday night. Boston came out strong against the 2009 champions exploiting opportunities on the Knights flanks and taking advantage of several Knights handling errors. The first two quarters were hard-fought and it took some time before the Knights gained the upper-hand. Try-scorers for the Knights were Luke Hume and Mike Cartwright with two each and Todd Fischer, Rob Caberra and Justin Ripley all scoring one. Fischer converted two of the tries. The Knights players' MVP was prop forward Mike Cartwright who was a powerhouse in attack, not only scoring two tries but making valuable meters on every touch of the ball.
The Knights will need to improve if they are to match it with their next opponents, the New Haven Warriors. Both games between these clubs last season were torrid encounters with the Knights narrow victors in each. The Warriors have size and speed all over the turf and will be fired up after their big win over Connecticut. New Haven will have the home ground advantage with the game being played at Ken Strong Stadium in West Haven (

In a first for the Knights, a B team was fielded against a Boston 13's B team. The game was played in great spirit with both A teams cheering on their respective teams. Boston were victorious in the B game, fielding a team of future AMNRL stars. Etienne Valette was the Knights players' MVP in the Frenchman's first appearance for the Knights.
In other results, the Jacksonville Axeman defeated the Fairfax Eagles 66-16, the Aston Bulls were victorious over the Philadelphia Fight 42-34 and the New Haven Warriors were too good for the Connecticut Wildcats 48-24.
