Knights face tough opposition in New Haven
Chris Carey in flight against the Warriors
Tony Duggan in action for the Celtic Crusaders
After securing a first round victory against the Boston 13s, the New York Knights head to New Haven this weekend to face the fiercely competitive Warriors. The Warriors will be looking for revenge after the Knights came from behind to defeat them in the 2009 Playoff series. That game was played at a frantic pace with the Warriors gaining the early ascendency with a 10-0 lead. The Knights rallied and fought back to level the scores at half-time, 10-10. In the second half, the Warriors again got away from the Knights, but in the end the Knights dug deep and defeated the Warriors 20-16. The Knights went on to become the 2009 Champions, while the Warriors were left regretting a lost opportunity.
Just weeks earlier, the Knights had executed another come from behind win against the Warriors in New Haven in the last game of the regular season. In this match, the lead changed several times, but in the end the Knights came out victors 36-24.
While having one of the strongest rosters in 2009, the Warriors have furthered strengthened their squad with the recruitment of two professional Australian Rugby League players. Tony Duggan, who played for the Brisbane Broncos and ex-Cronulla Sharks player Jye Mullane, both arrive at the Warriors for a match that will give the AMNRL a true indication of who will be the key teams in this year’s championship.
Kick-off is at 1pm on Sunday June 13 at Ken Strong Stadium in West Haven, Connecticut (
