Knights Name Guillaume "Gill" Cieutat as New Head CoachApril 16, 2007
Former French Student National Team player Guillaume "Gill" Cieutat has been named as the Head Coach of the New York Knights for the 2007 Season! Gill replaces longtime Knights player/coach Matt Astill, who has stepped down to focus on other business interests. "We are very excited to have Gill with us this year!" said Knights CEO Robert Balachandran. Balachandran added, "Like Matt, Gill was a great player back in his home country. I think that our players have responded better to a coach that has played the game at a high level before turning his attention to coaching."
Gill comes to New York after an outstanding rugby league playing career at lock and 5/8th with first division French powerhouses, Limoux and Villefranche. Gill, who joined the Knights last year as a player, was known for his no-nonsense approach to both practice sessions and games. Playing 5/8, Gill helped lead the team on the field during the first half of the 2006 season, but missed the last several games after suffering an injury to his neck and pinky toe.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to coach the team!" said Gill "Playing and training with the team all last year gave me a good understanding about the spirit of the club. That sprit along with the natural talent base of the team will form the base of successful season!"
Good luck Gill!
