Gutsy Knights beat Warriors 25-12 2006-07-15
In a real war down at The Castle on Saturday night the New York Knights showed their true character and class with a hard fought 25-15 win over the New Haven Warriors. The large crowd at Pier 40 was treated to a high paced, skillful, tough and sometimes spiteful clash between these two teams. New York again showed their ability to tough out any situation on the field with their skill in the backline providing the extra edge. The Knights also proved that they have young American players ready to step up when needed, especially after losing Guilluame Cietat and Matt Astill to season ending injuries.
The Knights got off to a great start with Col Manners getting the first of his two, with Adam Nable converting. The Warriors hit back with a try to big prop Siose Muliumu, who was the Warriors most dangerous weapon. Manners then crossed for his second and the Knights appeared to be cruising, with Adam Nable directing traffic, the fowards led by Joey Hughes going foward and Logan Johnston penertrating in the backs. At the halftime break the score was 12-6.
Despite losing Cieutat the Knights started the second half positively with Nable and Gareth Baxendale making good breaks which lead to a Nable field goal. This ignited the Warriors who started to up the tempo in attack and defence and Carrick Pell crossed to bring New Haven within one point. This started a war of attricion between the two sides and it turned into primal Rugby League, becoming a battle of who wanted it most. The big hits displayed by Hughes and Muliumu were some of the biggest witnessed at The Castle.
With about 20 minutes to go Jeremy Kosbob finished off a bacline movement and scored, closely followed by a try by Hughes. Logan Johnston crossed in the dying minutes to make it 25-12 to New York. "Great stuff", is how Knights plaer-coach Matt Astill described it. "We are definite contenders if we keep showing this amount of heart. As usual we tried to make it hard for ourselves with a few silly mistakes, but this is the best Knights side yet, with plenty of character. I can't single anyone out, honestly, everyone was great."
The knights travel to the War on the Shore to take on Utah in an exhibition game, but their eyes are locked in on Connecticut next Friday night at the Castle.
